In the saturated world of the AR platform, it takes something special to stand out. Many of us have handled everything from budget buys to five-figure, match-grade safe queens. Yet, finding that sweet spot, where top-tier performance meets rock-solid build quality and sheer shooting enjoyment, is a rare feat. Diamondback has hit the mark with their DB15 11.5” Obsidian Series Pistol. It’s not just another black rifle; it’s a modern warrior’s tool, proudly forged in the US.

The Power of a Name: Why “Obsidian”?
The name “Obsidian” is a nod to its volcanic origin: a naturally occurring glass rock, famed for its extreme hardness and durability. Historically, ancient warriors prized it for making the sharpest cutting tools and, crucially, as lethal spear tips and blades. Diamondback draws on this heritage to create a weapon that is equally effective and formidable. Like the spear, this pistol is a compact, precise instrument ready to reach out and touch a threat.

First Look: Beyond the Black Rifle
While the AR market is drowning in matte black, the Obsidian immediately commands attention with its durable OD Green Cerakote finish that visually sets it apart from everything else in the safe and at the range. This isn’t just a cheap amateur paint job done in someone’s basement. It’s a seamless, non-glare application that speaks to quality control applied to a CNC-machined 7075-T6 aluminum receiver set, produced entirely in-house at Diamondback’s facility in Cocoa, Florida.

The fit and finish are superb. There’s a deliberate, tight tolerance throughout with no upper-to-lower receiver wiggle, no irritating rattles. This attention to detail screams quality beyond its price point.
Barrel Geometry: The 11.5-Inch Sweet Spot
The 11.5-inch barrel is arguably the ideal length for a compact defensive or field weapon. It strikes the perfect balance:
- Maneuverability: Compact enough for easy navigation in vehicle-based applications or tight, interior home defense scenarios.
- Ballistics: It retains enough velocity for effective terminal performance from the 5.56/.223 round in relevant civilian engagement ranges.
The barrel is further enhanced with a black nitride coating, boosting both durability and corrosion resistance while maintaining a clean, professional aesthetic that matches the overall build.
Ergonomics and Handling: Agile and Intuitive
The DB15 Obsidian manages to be lightweight yet substantial, avoiding the common flaw of being muzzle-heavy. It feels balanced and responsive in the hand.
- Handguard: The 10-inch free-float M-LOK handguard offers ample accessory real estate while maintaining a slim, comfortable profile that facilitates the popular thumb-over-bore shooting grip.
- Controls: The use of an ambidextrous short-throw safety selector and a Battle Arms ambi magazine catch (a pleasant surprise on a gun at this price) demonstrates Diamondback’s focus on utility and added value.
- Pistol Grip: Diamondback opted for the excellent Magpul MOE K2 Grip. Its natural angle and positive texturing make for comfortable, confident control, whether running drills or maintaining a low ready.
- Muzzle Device: A standard, effective DB Obsidian Muzzle Brake caps the barrel, minimizing flash and helping to keep the rifle flat during rapid strings of fire.

Performance on the Range: Consistent and Controllable
During our field testing, the Obsidian proved remarkably manageable. While a shorter barrel does add some snap, the recoil impulse is mild and predictable. The carbine-length gas system is perfectly tuned, resulting in consistent and smooth cycling across a variety of ammunition brands and weights. Ejection patterns remained solid at the 3 o’clock position.
For close-range work, which is the clear intended use for a firearm in this configuration, the Obsidian truly shines:
- Muzzle Rise: Minimal, allowing for fast, tight controlled pairs and triple taps, even from unsupported positions.
- Agility: The compact footprint makes transitions between targets intuitive and quick, handling like a well-tuned sports car.
The bottom line on reliability: The pistol ran flawlessly through every magazine we fed it. The nitride-finished bolt carrier group is properly staked and wipes clean easily, ensuring longevity and smooth operation.
Customization and Configuration
While the factory setup is perfectly usable, the AR platform’s nature demands personalization.
- Optics: The full-length Picatinny top rail is ready for your choice of optic and backup sights. I threw on both, and it worked great.
- Trigger: The mil-spec single-stage trigger is serviceable, but predictably, it is the most likely candidate for an upgrade. Its reset is noticeably loud, but that’s a minor quibble for an easily replaceable component.
- Brace: The pistol ships with the SB Tactical SBA5 Brace. This collapsible brace is crucial for maintaining the firearm’s pistol status, allowing for the short barrel length without entering the NFA realm of Short-Barreled Rifles (SBRs). Know your rules if you plan to switch it out, so you don’t end up in the ATF’s crosshairs.

Parting Shot
Priced attractively at around $1,200 MSRP, the Diamondback DB15 11.5” Obsidian Pistol is an exceptional value. It is a highly capable firearm built in the USA that excels in three key areas:
- Home Defense: The compact 11.5-inch barrel and excellent balance make it a superb choice for maneuvering in confined spaces.
- Vehicle/Field Carry: Its compact nature is ideal for truck or field applications where a full-length rifle is cumbersome.
- Range Fun: It’s accurate, reliable, and controllable enough to be enjoyable for shooters of all experience levels.
If you’re looking for a dependable, compact 5.56 pistol that delivers exceptional quality and performance without breaking the bank, the Diamondback DB15 Obsidian deserves a spot on your list.
